I Can Finally Breathe….

This week has been particularly grueling. I have been testing all week for certification that applies to my current job and let’s just say the testing is, well, extensive. We started Tuesday morning and finished about two hours ago. Roughly three days of exams on paper, doing role playing exercises, testing our skills, knowledge, ability to adapt to changing situations, etc. I have heard that some people have called this week “Hell Week” and I’d say the moniker is appropriate. However, it is such a relief to be through with all the testing! Tomorrow, me and my comrades will get to share in the joy of receiving our certificates and be on our merry way back to our corners of the state.

I was sitting here thinking about how much time and effort has went into this moment, just for me alone. I started this journey in July of 2016. I started back to college in the Fall of 2016 as well. I went through the less stringent version of certification for a lower classification in April of 2017, that did not require a college degree. Since then I have pounded the pavement on my college degree up to this point, doing the required components necessary to qualify for certification this year, prior to this week. And here we are. All I have to do is go back tomorrow and go through exit interviews. I feel so relieved. You know how when you are under water for a longer period of time than you anticipated and you have to rush up and when you finally get to the surface and are able to gasp for air, the feeling that you get? That’s exactly how I feel right now. That kind of relief.

I wish that were the end of everything but I still have three weeks left to complete my college degree and roughly 12-15 more assignments to go but I have come too far to let that keep me from finishing. It is so weird to think that 5 years ago I was just some junkie who couldn’t get through the day without sticking a needle in his arm and today I am almost a college graduate with a job, family, and the works. I am beyond grateful for where I am today, and grateful for how I got here. Thanks for reading, have a great weekend everyone!
